FC Augsburg’s bid for Bundesliga survival has suffered a blow with the news that club captain Paul Verhaegh will miss "the next few weeks" due to a muscle injury.

The club are yet to reveal the full extent of the injury or the Dutchman’s expected lay-off, but the 32-year-old will miss this weekend’s trip to 1. FSV Mainz 05 at the very least.

Verhaegh has scored six goals this season - all from the penalty spot - in Die Fuggerstädter’s battle against the drop. Markus Weinzierl’s side currently sit 15th, one place above the relegation play-off place on goal difference.
