The injury was described on the club website as "traumatic cartilage damage" and the Swiss striker - on loan at Hamburg for the rest of the season from Borussia Mönchengladbach - was understandably disappointed with the severity of the diagnosis.

"I'm deeply saddened, because I had a lot going for me in the second half of the season with Hamburg. Now I'll be keeping my fingers crossed tightly for the lads," said Drmic, 23, on his Facebook page. "You can imagine that, right now, it's hard for me to remain optimistic, but I've always been a fighter and will accept this fight to be back out on the pitch as soon as possible."
