Russ was diagnosed with testicular cancer in May 2016 and it was not certain he would be able to play football again. After successful treatment and a long programme of rehabilitation, however, the 31-year-old is back and managed 80 minutes on Saturday night.

Anchoring Eintracht’s defence in a three-man backline, Russ helped the Eagles thwart many a Hamburg attack - no mean feat in the form HSV have been in in recent weeks.
