Jonker enjoyed a temporary spell in charge of Bayern Munich in 2011, remaining unbeaten in his five games at the helm of the Bavarian giants. Gomez netted in every one of those fixtures and the legendary German striker continued the incredible partnership with his new coach, adding an opener against Leipzig to his MD23 goal at Mainz. Yunus Mallı’s sumptuous through-pass released Daniel Didavi, who in turn expertly directed across for Gomez to take a touch before slamming left-footed high into the net. Emil Forsberg and Timo Werner tried to lift Leipzig’s first-half frustration, the latter’s centre following a counter-attack just failing to reach the Swede at full stretch.

Hoping to maintain a proud home record prior to Wolfsburg’s arrival, Leipzig doubled their efforts after the restart. However, from the point Werner blasted over, the game’s earlier pattern quickly reemerged. After seeing a smart chip over Péter Gulácsi strike the upright, Wolfsburg’s Didavi reacted by sending the rebound against the Leipzig goalkeeper, who could only gather in relief after Gomez had poked against the base of his post. At the other end, Marcel Sabitzer should have done better when well-placed, but the Austrian striking straight at Koen Casteels summed up the home team’s frustration.
Man of the Match
Industrious throughout, Didavi was deadly when it came to teeing up Mario Gomez for the game's only goal and the 27-year-old midfielder may prove a crucial component of a Wolfsburg team looking hungry to rise up the table under their new coach.
Talking Point
Looking somewhat lost at sea during what has emerged as a difficult season, Wolfsburg appear rejuvenated by Andries Jonker's arrival. The visitors were strong in the tackle, well-organised and only rarely troubled by the Bundesliga's second-ranked side.
