Frankfurt still have a number of key players out injured, while Haris Seferovic and David Abraham are suspended. There is some good news for coach Niko Kovac, though, as the Eagles attempt to snap a three-game losing streak – Omar Mascarell is back from suspension, while Makoto Hasebe and Bastian Oczipka are available after shaking off minor complaints. Marco Russ – who came on as a late substitute in Tuesday's DFB Cup win over Arminia Bielefeld – could make an emotional first Bundesliga appearance since May, having been given the all-clear following his battle with testicular cancer.

Freiburg coach Christian Streich could be tempted to switch his tried-and-tested 4-4-2 for a 5-3-2, with defender Marc-Oliver Kempf coming in for just his second appearance of the season after recovering from knee surgery. Maximilian Philipp has been given a one-match ban after getting booked in last week's 3-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund, and he could be replaced by Janik Haberer, who returns from suspension. Streich has various other options, with defensive midfielder Amir Abrashi and forward Florian Niederlechner also vying for a starting berth.
