Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mario Götze has been sidelined for the foreseeable future due to "metabolic disturbances".

The 24-year-old has struggled with a string of injuries since returning to BVB last summer, most recently with muscular problems. The FIFA World Cup winner's last Bundesliga appearance was in BVB's 1-1 draw at Mainz on Matchday 18.

The club released a statement saying that a comprehensive medical examination revealed the metabolic disturbances, which have forced him to withdraw from training altogether.

"I'm currently undergoing treatment and will do everything in my power to be back in training and helping my team to achieve our common goals as soon as possible," Götze told the official Dortmund website.

Sporting director Michael Zorc voiced his support for the attacker: "We're happy to have now uncovered the reasons for Mario's difficulties and are convinced that his extraordinary abilities will give us additional quality once he has completely recovered from this. Mario has the full backing and maximum support of everyone at BVB during his recovery."
