FC Schalke 04 have completed a deal to sign FC Sevilla midfielder Yevhen Konoplyanka on a season-long loan.

The 56-time Ukrainian international is the Royal Blues’ eighth summer signing and follows in the footsteps of Coke in moving to Gelsenkirchen from the reigning UEFA Europa League champions.

Sporting director Christian Heidel had promised to make “at least” one more signing before Schalke’s disappointing opening day defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt.

“We’re delighted to have a fast, goalscoring midfielder, who can operate on either wing,” said head coach Markus Weinzierl. “Furthermore, Yevhen Konoplyanka boasts a wealth of experience on account of featuring regularly on the international stage for both his national team and his previous clubs.”

“It’s brilliant to be at a club like this and to be able to play in front of fans like theirs,” said Konoplyanaka, who is seen as the natural replacement for Leroy Sane. “I’m hoping to get as many minutes under my belt as possible in order to help the club reach their targets.”

The 26-year-old, who only joined Sevilla last summer, made 54 appearances in all competitions for the club scoring nine goals and providing a further nine assists. The two-time Ukrainian footballer of the year was also a UEFA Europa League winner with Los Rojiblancos and will be available for selection in Schalke’s Matchday 2 fixture with FC Bayern München after the international break.
