There were understandably contrasting emotions at the Coface Arena as 1. FSV Mainz 05 celebrated their first league win in four matches, while Borussia Mönchengladbach digested a 1-0 loss and a sixth consecutive Friday night game having failed to score.

1. FSV Mainz 05 1-0 Borussia Mönchengladbach

Goals: 1-0 Clemens (21')

Loris Karius (Mainz goalkeeper): “It was a good game from all of us. We rode our luck at times but we put in a good performance. The second half was long and they put us under pressure, but we managed to hold out. We have another tough game in Hannover next week but we have a cushion now. February is a very tough month for us with games against Bayern and Dortmund to come.”

Martin Schmidt (Mainz coach): “We knew it was going to be a very difficult game and we had to cover a lot of ground. But we want to be the team that runs the most in this division and we’re delighted that performances like that can bring us wins.”

Havard Nordtveit (Gladbach midfielder): "It's unbelievable that we've lost. We deserved at least a point."

Yann Sommer (Gladbach goalkeeper): "It's a bitter defeat. Mainz scored from their only chance; we couldn't make any of ours count."

Andre Schubert (Gladbach coach): “We had to change a lot of things around today but we played very well in the first half. It’s obviously very frustrating to miss the chances we had, but I see it as a positive thing that we created those chances, especially when we’re missing eight or nine players.”
