1. FC Köln have completed the signing of Borussia Dortmund centre-back Neven Subotic on a six-month loan deal.

“Neven enjoyed great success during his time at BVB,” said Billy Goats’ coach Peter Stöger. “We're convinced he can become an important player for us in the coming months.”

Subotic won back-to-back Bundesliga titles with Dortmund in 2011 and 2012, and was part of the team that lost the UEFA Champions League final to Bundesliga rivals FC Bayern München in 2013.

Injuries and a dip in form have seen the 28-year-old make only five starts in the last two Bundesliga campaigns. With fellow defender Mergim Mavraj joining Hamburger SV in recent weeks, Subotic’s path into the Köln first team seems clear, though.

“I'm really looking forward to the challenge at my new club,” said the American-born Serbia international. “I'm incredibly thankful for the fantastic years I spent at BVB. As an ambitious professional I am 100 per cent committed to 1. FC Köln from this day forth. I want to play football in the Bundesliga again. That drives me on.”
