SV Werder Bremen suffered a blow on Monday as Philipp Bargfrede was ruled out for two months after picking up an injury against FC Schalke 04.

Bargfrede sustained the injury in the first half of Bremen's 3-1 win in Gelsenkirchen on Matchday 18. An MRI scan on Monday confirmed that the defensive midfielder had suffered a meniscus tear in his right knee. He is expected to be out of action for at least two months.

Bargfrede had played in 14 of Bremen's 18 games so far this season, but Bremen coach Viktor Skripnik said his team could cope with the loss of the 26 year-old.

"The diagnosis is of course a real blow. I hope that he recovers quickly," said Skripnik, whose side lie 16th, four points above the bottom two. "Philipp is an important player and valuable team member. However, we have good alternatives at our disposal who are now tasked with filling his shoes."
