FC Ingolstadt 04 swept to a 3-1 win over Hamburger SV, with goals from Pascal Groß, Markus Suttner and Almog Cohen lifting Maik Walpurgis’ side into 16th at the Red Shorts’ expense.
Goals: 1-0 Groß (14’) 2-0 Suttner (22’), 3-0 Cohen (p.g. 47’), 3-1 Sakai (62’)
Ingolstadt began the day in 17th, one point worse off than their visitors, and clearly intent on overtaking the Red Shorts in the table. Less than 15 minutes were on the clock when Walpurgis’ side made it 1-0, with Groß volleying home a wonderful opener from a tight angle. Suttner then doubled Ingolstadt’s lead, with his deflected free-kick spinning past a stranded Christian Mathenia in the Hamburg goal.
Things went from bad to worse for Hamburg minutes after the restart. Dennis Diekmeier felled Groß and Almog Cohen stepped up to lash the resulting penalty home for 3-0. HSV captain Gotoku Sakai flashed home a stunning consolation just past the hour, but it proved to be too little too late for Hamburg, who drop into 17th.
Man of the Match
Groß was central to Ingolstadt’s victory, scoring a stunning opener and completing a team-high 23 passes as the hosts held on to a valuable three points,
Having previously lost back-to-back games for the first time under Walpurgis, this was a welcome boost for Ingolstadt. Hamburg may be deep in the relegation quagmire themselves, but the hosts never looked in trouble and if they can put on attacking performances like this – if only at home – in the coming weeks, then their top-flight status could be secure.
- Groß’s goal was his first for Ingolstadt since October 2015, when he opened the scoring in a 2-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt.
- Hamburg replaced Ingolstadt in having the worst home record this season.
- Ingolstadt are two points clear of Hamburg now, with a plus-eight superior goal difference
