Borussia Dortmund drew a third consecutive Bundesliga match after being held to a 1-1 stalemate at home to FC Augsburg on Tuesday evening.

If Dortmund were buoyed by the news of Julian Weigl signing a contract extension earlier in the day they did not show it initially, with their build-up play often lacking its characteristic speed and flair. Indeed, a mistake in midfield led to Augsburg going in front: the visitors poured forward on the break and Dong-Won Ji finished at the second attempt after Roman Weidenfeller saved his first effort.

That prompted a furious response from BVB early in the second half and they equalised almost immediately through Ousmane Dembele's smart finish. It was largely one-way traffic towards the Augsburg goal after that, but it was not until late in the game that Dortmund could have scored a winner, as Marwin Hitz made a smart save from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang before Andre Schürrle fired the rebound wide.Ultimately, however, the hosts will be disappointed to end the year with a third straight draw.
