- Augsburg move up to 12th place.
- Gladbach's fifth loss away in a row.
- Baum wins first game in charge at WWK Arena.
Goals: 1-0 Hinteregger (75')
With both sides working hard to deny the other time and space on the ball, neither keeper was truly tested in the first half. For the hosts Ji-Dong Won saw a diving header and a long-range shot fly past the target. Raffael delivered a couple of teasing free kicks for Gladbach, with Andreas Christensen meeting one and glancing his header over the crossbar.
The second half saw the match gradually open up, with Mahmoud Dahoud shooting just over the bar following fine work from Raffael on the right flank. But with time beginning to run out, the hosts took a precious lead when Hinteregger rose to Jonathan Schmidt’s corner to place a clever header just inside Yann Sommer’s post. Augsburg stayed strong to frustrate Gladbach in the closing minutes, closing out the game to claim a first win in five outings.
Man of the match
Mahmoud Dahoud looked the most likely player to light up the match with some much-needed creativity, showing off some delightful skill and missing what would have been a fine goal by only a few inches.
The change of coach at the WWK Arena certainly had an instant impact, and Baum should be pleased with the fighting qualities and the willingness to grind out a result that his side showed.
- Hinteregger scored his first goal in Germany since arriving at Gladbach on loan in January.
- Gladbach's last away win was against SV Darmstadt 98 on the final day of the 2015/16 season.
- The Foals have now lost five in a row on the road.
