Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez should return to the starting line-up for Bayer 04 Leverkusen after coming on as a substitute in the recent defeats to FC Bayern München and RB Leipzig, while Aleksandar Dragovic is likely to drop to the bench as Ömer Toprak makes his comeback in defence. Joel Pohjanpalo has recovered from a foot injury, but Leverkusen suffered a double injury blow in midweek – Admir Mehmedi will be out for several weeks with a torn abductor muscle, while Kevin Volland will not be back in action until February due to a thigh strain.

After a disappointing run of three straight defeats, SC Freiburg coach Christian Streich could be tempted to make changes, but his options are limited due to a series of injuries. Janik Haberer, Jonas Meffert or Onur Bulut will come in for the suspended Nicolas Höfler, while Julian Schuster could be handed his first minutes of the Bundesliga season. Caglar Söyüncü has recovered from a concussion and should return to the starting line-up in place of Marc Torrejon.
