FC Schalke 04 captain Benedikt Höwedes has been ruled out of Matchday 12's Revierderby with Borussia Dortmund after breaking a metacarpel in his right hand.

The centre-half broke the fourth knuckle in his right hand during a challenge with Lukas Hinterseer in the 72nd minute of the Royal-Blues' 1-1 draw with FC Ingolstadt 04 on Matchday 11. Schalke's medical team confirmed the severity of the injury after the game and Höwedes underwent an operation on Sunday.

A club statement after his operation said that the 2014 FIFA World Cup winner will "be out for the next ten days", ruling him out of Sunday's trip to local rivals Dortmund.

"Thanks for all your best wishes," tweeted Höwedes on Sunday. "The operation went well and I hope to be back in training and playing with the team as quickly as possible."
