Cologne left-back Jonas Hector will be out of action for the foreseeable future after tearing right ankle ligaments in his side’s 3-1 UEFA Europa League defeat to Arsenal.

Hector was withdrawn from proceedings in the 35th minute following a clash with home goalkeeper David Ospina and was examined in Cologne the following day when the problem was diagnosed.

“It’s a really sad situation for Jonas,” said club coach Peter Stöger, whose side have lost the first three games of the Bundesliga season.

Cologne face Borussia Dortmund on Matchday 4, before welcoming Eintracht Frankfurt to the RheinEnergieSTADION on Matchday 5. The Billy Goats’ UEFA Europa League adventure continues on 28 September when they welcome Red Star Belgrade.
