Sinsheim - TSG 1899 Hoffenheim have announced the signing of Switzerland international Fabian Schär from FC Basel 1893.

'Ambitious team'

The 23-year-old central defender, who was an ever-present for Basel in their successful Swiss Super League title defence in 2014/15, has signed a four-year deal valid until 30 June 2019.

"We've taken another step forward in terms of building our squad with the signing of Fabian Schär," explained Hoffenheim sporting director Alexander Rosen, just two days after it was confirmed Jonathan Schmid would be joining the Sinsheim-based outfit from SC Freiburg. "Schär’s build-up play is very good and he is someone who has already been able to gain international experience at a young age. For him to sign for Hoffenheim is confirmation of the great work we are doing here."

After rising through the ranks at hometown club FC Wil, Schär joined Basel in July 2012. He has since won three successive league titles with the club and can still add a Swiss Cup winners' medal to his collection in Sunday's final against FC Sion, before moving to a Hoffenheim side he described as "a young, ambitious team with a perfect infrastructure."
