Cologne - Fabian Hambüchen doesn't just happen to be one of Germany’s most successful gymnasts of all time, the 27-year-old is also a huge football fan, with 1. FC Köln his boyhood club.
In an exclusive interview with bundesliga.com, he talks about the upcoming Bundesliga season and what his personal highlight is set to be...
bundesliga.com: Who was your childhood hero?
Fabian Hambüchen: Jürgen Klinsmann, Oliver Bierhoff, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Zinedine Zidane, [Francesco] Totti etc… The old guard!
bundesliga.com: How important is the Bundesliga to you nowadays?
Hambüchen: I participate in a different sport, so for that reason it’s not the be all and end all. Saying that though, I enjoy watching football and always look forward to the Bundesliga. Sportschau on Saturday night is a ritual.
'Wolfsburg will be extremely motivated'
bundesliga.com: What is your favourite Bundesliga memory?
Hambüchen: Whenever I have time I go to the RheinEnergieStadion to watch 1. FC Köln, where I’m an honorary member. My best memory is from when I carried the ball onto the field - that was a lot of fun!
bundesliga.com: Which match are you most looking forward to in the new season?
Hambüchen: Any 1. FC Köln home game. It’s always a lot of fun!
bundesliga.com: Which team do you think will cause the biggest stir in 2015/16?
Hambüchen: After winning the DFB Cup, VfL Wolfsburg will be extremely motivated and, in my opinion, could be a genuine title contender. My thoughts, like always, are with Köln – I hope the lads can produce another good season.
bundesliga.com: Who would you like to see FC Bayern München play in the opening game of the campaign? And what do you think the score will be?
Hambüchen: That’s a tricky one. A rerun of Bayern vs Borussia Dortmund after the entertaining DFB Cup semi-final would certainly be really interesting.
