Cologne - Admir Mehmedi may have been struggling to find the net on a regular basis in the current campaign, but the SC Freiburg striker proved what he is capable of on Matchday 29, scoring a stunner against 1. FSV Mainz 05 which earned the Swiss international first place in bundesliga.com's Goal of the Week vote.

Tight race

The 24-year-old made a confident run into the visitors’ box after skilfully controlling a long ball to fire home from just inside the area, and although his strike did little to prevent his side slipping to a 3-2 defeat at home to the 05ers, it meant the world to Mehmedi.

“This superb goal will give him confidence,” said Freiburg goalkeeper Roman Bürki after his compatriot had ended a 1077-minute goalless streak with only his second goal this term. Team captain Julian Schuster, meanwhile, highlighted how crucial the 2014 FIFA World Cup participant can be to a Freiburg side fighting the drop: “Admir is a player that has the ability to change a game at any time.”

It turned out to be a close-run race for the Goal of the Week award, however, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang winning just seven per cent less votes than Mehmedi. The Gabon international’s deft chip gave Borussia Dortmund the lead in the 3-0 success over SC Paderborn, while FC Bayern München midfield dynamo Sebastian Rode earned 22 per cent of bundesliga.com users’ votes for his Arjen Robben-like strike in the 2-0 win at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

FC Schalke 04 prospect Leroy Sane’s 70-yard run, meanwhile, won 15 per cent, with FC Augsburg star Tobias Werner coming fifth (6 per cent) with a skilful first-time volley against VfB Stuttgart.
