Wolfsburg - On his first return to former club 1. FSV Mainz 05 in VfL Wolfsburg colours, Andre Schürrle expressed not only his admiration for the passionate fans of the Karnevalsverein, but also his satisfaction a securing a hard-fought point in the sides’ 1-1 draw.

bundesliga.com rounds up the post-match reaction from both sides at the Coface Arena…

Niko Bungert: “We were close to getting three points today, but Wolfsburg are a really dangerous side so you can’t let your concentration drop. The coach knows how to motivate us, which helps us focus on the pitch. That and the fans’ great support were key to the result today.”

Johannes Geis: “We didn’t allow Wolfsburg to counter which was our plan today. The 1-1 draw is a result both sides can be satisfied with. We knew Wolfsburg would be tired having played so many games in the last few weeks. We’re only five points above the relegation zone, but we’re feeling positive and need to make sure we stay up.”

Daniel Brosinski: “We had by far the better chances, which makes it all the more disappointing that we didn’t get all three points. If you look at the balance of play we put them under a lot of pressure, but we missed the opportunity to score the second goal.”

Yunus Malli: “When you go 1-0 in front then concede the equaliser, it’s always disappointing. We played with a lot of passion and gave everything. The point could be worth its weight in gold come the end of the season. We’d have taken a 1-1 draw before the match, but if you look at the way we played perhaps we could have got more from the game. We’re obviously disappointed, but we go into the next few weeks with confidence.”

Andre Schürrle: “I have to thank the Mainz fans and the city, it’s always good to come back. The fans here are unique. We didn’t play well in the first half and they deserved to take the lead and could’ve scored one or two more. We fought back, though, and I think we can be satisfied with the draw. I know I can do better, but once I’ve got my confidence again I’m capable of helping any team.”

Timm Klose: “It was difficult for us finding a way into the game and we lost possession too often in the first half, so I’m happy we were able to get a draw. After clearing the ball [with his head] I was out of it for a few moments and then they scored from the ensuing corner. I need to apologise to the team for not having been able to clear the situation. I’m glad the coaching team are giving me games at the moment, having not played much.”

Luiz Gustavo: “We know full well we had a few problems today, so we can be satisfied with the point, even if our performance wasn’t quite up to scratch. Credit to the team because we fought very hard throughout the 90 minutes to get this draw. We were playing against a very good side who are technically gifted and physically very strong. It’s not easy playing against a team like that. I’m very happy my goal helped the team get a point from this game.”

Robin Knoche: “We couldn’t really get into the game in the first half. We had a bit of luck with the equaliser, so we can be happy with the point. We’ve got a bit of a break now, but we obviously want to kick on after the international break.”
