Munich - Spanish international midfielder Javi Martinez has trained with FC Bayern München for the first time since damaging cruciate knee ligaments in the Supercup defeat to Borussia Dortmund in August.

Trio on the mend

The 26-year-old, who has been undergoing an extensive rehabilitation programme in a bid to return to full fitness, resumed light running at the club’s Säbener Straße complex on Thursday afternoon, but is still some way off a return to first-team action.

Martinez has made 78 appearances for the German record titleholders since joining the club from Spanish La Liga outfit Athletic Club in August 2012, but has yet to feature for Pep Guardiola’s troops in 2014/15 as a result of the injury he sustained at the Signal Iduna Park over six months ago. Martinez is the third player FC Bayern player to resume light training in a matter of days after club captain Philipp Lahm and midfielder Thiago Alcantara both stepped up their respective recoveries this week.
