Munich - FC Bayern München head coach Pep Guardiola is optimistic that midfielder "can be back training with us again soon" after the 23-year-old's positive performance in training on Friday.
Thiago was granted an extended winter break in Barcelona, where he underwent treatment from trusted doctor Ramon Cugat, before returning to the Bavarian capital on Wednesday.
'In the final phase of his treatment'
He came through Thursday's fitness session unscathed and will spend the next few weeks under the watchful eye of club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wolhfahrt as he steps up his recovery from a third bout of knee ligament surgery. On Friday morning Thiago then performed individual running exercises, interval training and dribbled a ball around cones, much to Guardiola's delight. "I think he'll be able to train with us again soon - in two to three weeks, or maybe a month," said the Catalan tactician at his pre-match press conference ahead of Bayern's 6-0 win at SC Paderborn on Saturday. "The doctors have told me his knee is making good progress. We think he's in the final phase of his treatment. The doctors are very optimistic and Thiago's optimistic, so therefore I am too." The Bayern No.6 has been plagued by injury since moving to the Bundesliga from FC Barcelona in summer 2013, with the Spain international last seen in competitive action in the 3-3 draw at home to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on 29 March 2014.
