Cologne - Having watched Kevin De Bruyne play a starring role in VfL Wolfsburg's stunning 4-1 victory over FC Bayern München on Friday evening, bundesliga.com users have voted the Belgium international the Matchday 18 Player of the Week.

Overwhelming majority

The flame-haired 23-year-old had assisted more goals than any other Bundesliga player prior to the Rückrunde curtain-raiser, and it didn't take him long to add to that tally as he set up Bas Dost for the game's opener after just four minutes. De Bruyne followed that up with two thumping finishes past Manuel Neuer in the second half as the Wolves closed the gap on the league leaders to eight points ahead of the englische Woche.

De Bruyne earned 61 per cent of the vote, leaving SV Werder Bremen striker Franco Di Santo and SC Freiburg striker Nils Petersen in his wake. Di Santo marked his comeback to the Werder team following injury with a superb brace against Hertha Berlin, earning the Argentinian 30 per cent of the post-matchday poll.

Bremen loanee Petersen, meanwhile, received just 9 percent of the vote, despite becoming the first ever Freiburg player to score a lupenreiner Hat-trick in the Black Forest club's 4-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt at the Schwarzwald-Stadion.
