Wolfsburg - Emotions were running high long before a ball was even kicked in VfL Wolfsburg's stirring 4-1 win over Bundesliga pacesetters FC Bayern München on Friday.

finds out what some of the players made of an overwhelming night at the Volkswagen Arena, where all involved paid their respects to the late Junior Malanda following his tragic death earlier this month…

Bas Dost:

"It doesn't get any better than this. What happened with Junior [Malanda] beforehand, we'd waited a long time for this game. No one expected it. It was really tough at the start, especially with the fan choreography, but we showed our strength and we can all be proud of that. We waited for our chances and struck at the right moments. I had a bit of luck with my second goal. In the second half we played brilliantly right until the end."

Diego Benaglio:

"We thought we would get a few chances, but it doesn’t happen often that you beat Bayern by such a big margin. Maybe it played into our hands a bit that it was the opening game of the

Rückrunde

and maybe Bayern weren't quite at 100% yet, but we made sure they weren't able to settle into their stride."

Manuel Neuer:

"Obviously it's a bad start to the second half of the season. It's not how we imagined it. It's not a disaster, but we know we still have a lot to do. We have to put it behind us and look forward. A midweek game is just what we need right now. It'd be no good if we had to wait eight days until our next game. Now we have to get our act together."

Jerome Boateng:

"We played really badly today. Maybe it's good it happened today, so that we can sort ourselves out. We hardly won any challenges and when you do that against this sort of team you can't win. We just weren't aggressive enough and gave the ball away too easily. We knew how we were supposed to stop them on the counter, but we didn't do it. After losing so emphatically and playing so badly against Wolfsburg, everyone knows that they have to improve and make amends on Tuesday [against FC Schalke 04]."

Bastian Schweinsteiger:

"We made too many mistakes, we let them play on the counter. If you do that against a team that's so strong on the break, it's to be expected that you'll lose. Clearly it wasn't our day. We just have to forget about it and look at what we can do better."

Arjen Robben:

"We wanted to pick up where we left off at the end of the

Hinrunde

, but that didn't happen. It's a wake-up call."
