Köln edge Corinthans in Florida Cup

Orlando - Slawomir Peszko scored the only goal of the game as 1. FC Köln secured a 1-0 win over two-time FIFA Club World Cup champions SC Corinthians Paulista in the Florida Cup on Thursday.

Peszko on song

The Polish midfielder scored just 14 minutes into the game at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, with Marcel Risse providing the assist. Pablo Guerrero almost levelled matters for the Brazilian side before half time, but Köln goalkeeper Thomas Kessler was on hand to turn the former Hamburger SV attacker's 18-yard strike around the post.

Luciano da Rocha Neves headed straight at Kessler as Corinthians turned the screw after the restart, but the Billy Goats rode the storm and were unfortunate not to add to their tally later in the half. Peszko had an effort ruled out for offside following another slick interchange with Risse, who himself went close with a 70th-minute free kick. Köln face Fluminese FC on Saturday, needing to better Bayer 04 Leverkusen's result to claim the inaugural prize.
