Cologne - Off the Ball, bundesliga.com's quirky periodical, offers a selection of the offbeat stories to have emerged in Germany’s top flight in the past few days.

In this New Year's edition, we look at FC Bayern München's most googled players in 2014, 's questionable sartorial style and an unusual role for former Schalke and Dortmund midfielder Steffen Freund.

2014 will undoubtedly go down as an unforgettable year for Bayern's Germany internationals. Not only did they lift the Bundesliga and DFB Cup trophies, they also won the FIFA World Cup a couple of months later. Now, Ballon d'Or finalist , and have another accolade to add to that collection: they were the most googled Bayern players in 2014.

That trio's Bayern team-mate Jerome Boateng took a trip down memory lane on New Year's Eve, tweeting a photo of himself with his former Manchester City team-mates Micah Richards and Shaun Wright-Philips, among others. While Boateng's on-field elegance cannot be called into question, the same cannot be said of his dress sense back in 2010...

Hamburger SV midfielder (pictured, l.) took great delight in poking fun at one of his former coaches at Tottenham Hotspur, Steffen Freund (pictured, r.). Holtby posted a link on Facebook with an image of Freund dressed as Tinky Winky from the Tellytubbies, labelling it a "legendary pic".
