Bremen - The emotions from both sets of players could hardly have made for a starker contrast after SV Werder Bremen ground out a 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund in a true basement battle on Matchday 17.

Borussia Dortmund

The home side's manic celebrations brought into sharp definition how crestfallen the BVB players appeared at the final whistle in the Weserstadion after a defeat that leaves Borussia in the automatic relegation places over the winter break for the first time in their top-flight history.

rounds up the best of the post-match reaction...

Mats Hummels:

"We're trying to get our heads round this. In the last few weeks we've been okay and at home we seem to have turned a corner, but away from home, it's been anything but. It's quite unbelievable how rubbish we've been away from home."

Mitchell Langerak:

"It's difficult to say what's going wrong, I for one can't really explain it. The early goal obviously changed things and played into Bremen's hands. It's clear that we're not in a good situation and need to turn things around urgently in the

Rückrunde

. The main thing we have to do is work hard. The preparation will be very important and all that counts is putting points on the board. We didn't start that well today, we lost our stability and played without organisation. Like I said, we have to improve this situation urgently."

Matthias Ginter:

"I'm gutted we've lost. The plan was to end the year with a win. The first half of the season hash' been easy for us, we haven't played to our potential anywhere near enough. The game in Bremen summed up our

Hinrunde

. We've conceded too many early goals and given the ball away far too often. We put a lot into the second half, but didn't manage to create clear-cut chances. We'll use our days off to put it all behind us and after that it's about putting the pedal to the floor.

SV Werder Bremen

Davie Selke:

"We make sure that we give it everything in every game and it was an important win today. We showed the right attitude. The win gives a positive feeling going into the winter break and we couldn't have hoped for a better Christmas present."

Zlatko Junuzovic:

"The atmosphere in the stadium was phenomenal today and the fans were a massive help. We played very well, we were extremely solid at the back and gave it our all. It was a really good team performance, a big compliment to my team-mates. This is the attitude we have to show in every game. We now go into the winter break in positive spirits. After our holiday we'll be able to get to know our coaching team even better."

Fin Bartels:

"We played really well and didn't feel the pressure. We knew the conditions today would work to our advantage, it's the sort of weather we like. We could've decided the game earlier and avoided sweating about the win right until the end. The team and the fans are a real unit and you saw that again today. We're a real force at home and it was an amazing atmosphere."

Clemens Fritz:

"We knew it was a massive game and we’re delighted to have won it. Now we can go into the winter break on a positive note."
