Sestak snatches Bochum a point in Kaiserslautern

Kaiserslautern - Promotion hopefuls 1. FC Kaiserslautern dropped points for a fourth week running as a late Stanislav Sestak strike denied them all three points in a 2-2 draw at home to VfL Bochum 1848 on Friday night.

Bochum had little answer to Kaiserslautern’s early pressure as the hosts established an early grip on the encounter. Srdjan Lakic was lively, but squandered a gilt-edged opportunity to fire the Red Devils in front after ten minutes, blazing over from ten yards out with only Andreas Luthe to beat. It was one of several missed chances that came back to haunt Kaiserslautern when Simon Terodde capitalised on a mistake by Tobias Sippel to put the visitors in front, before the offside flag prevented Bochum adding a second shortly before the break.

The hosts duly came out of the dressing rooms with real purpose and needed little time to produce an equaliser, as Lakic headed home from Karim Matmour’s cross on the half volley. Substitute Sebastian Jacob thought he had wrapped up the win with his simple finish in the 82nd minute, but Sestak had other ideas, rising highest to meet Yusuke Tasaka’s free-kick and leaving the Red Devils at risk of losing further ground on the promotion front-runners.
