Injury blow for Schalke's Goretzka
Gelsenkirchen - FC Schalke 04 midfielder Leon Goretzka faces a race to be fit in time for the new Bundesliga season after suffering a thigh injury during a pre-season friendly on Saturday.
The 19-year-old had to be substituted after just eleven minutes of the Royal Blues' 5-0 victory over sixth-tier outfit DJK TuS Hordel, with a scan revealing a partial tear of a muscle in his left thigh. Goretza is expected to be sidelined for several weeks.
The midfielder has made 25 Bundesliga appearances for Schalke since joining the club from Bundesliga 2 side VfL Bochum last summer and was named in Joachim Löw's preliminary squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The Gelsenkirchen club begin the new 2014/15 Bundesliga season with a trip to Hannover 96.
