Hanover - Hannover 96 utility man Andre Hoffmann faces several months on the sidelines after suffering a knee ligament injury in training.

Bitter pill

The 23-year-old ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Friday morning and is set to undergo surgery in Augsburg on Monday, ruling him out of the start of the 2014/15 Bundesliga season and beyond.

“It’s obviously a big blow for Andre as well as the team, and we will miss him,” said 96ers' head coach Tayfun Korkut. “But we know he’ll work extremely hard to get back to fitness after the operation. As a club we’ll do whatever we can to help him recover so that he can come back stronger.”

Hoffmann, a Germany U-21 international, made 23 appearances in the Bundesliga last season, helping the Reds to a 10th-placed finish in the table. In total he has featured 39 times and scored two goals in the top flight since joining the Lower Saxony club from MSV Duisburg in January 2013.

Hannover begin their 2014/15 league season at home to FC Schalke 04.
