Berlin - Hertha Berlin have beefed up their back row for the coming season, signing centre-back John Heitinga from Fulham FC on a free transfer.
The 30-year-old Dutch international put pen to paper on a two-year contract, with the option to extend for a further season, after completing his medical in the capital on Monday.
"I was desperate to play in the Bundesliga, that's why I'm really looking forward to playing for Hertha." explained Heitinga. "I'm looking forward to meeting the team and their terrific fans." Die Alte Dame's sporting director Michael Preetz also expressed his delight at the signing. "John Heitinga is a defender with international experience, from whom our younger players in particular will learn a lot," he said.
Heitinga joined Fulham from fellow English Premier League side Everton at the beginning of the 2013/14 campaign, but made just 14 appearances for the West London outfit. The former Atletico de Madrid and AFC Ajax man has also won 87 international caps for the Netherlands, with his last international appearance coming in a friendly against China just over twelve months ago.
