Freiburg/Nuremberg - SC Freiburg have announced the capture of Mike Frantz from relegated 1. FC Nürnberg after the 27-year-old successfully passed a medical.

Frantz leaves, replacement found

Frantz, veteran of 109 Bundesliga matches and 16 in Germany's second division, says he is looking forward to a new challenge at a club he believes are going places in Germany's top flight.

"SC Freiburg are a club who have established themselves in the Bundesliga in recent years," he said. "I hope to be able to help with my experience. The way in which Freiburg play football has always impressed me – it was always uncomfortable playing against them, and that makes it all the more comforting for me to know that I'll now be playing on their side."

Freiburg's director of sport Jochen Saier shared Frantz's delight, saying: "We soon realised that he is just the right player for us in terms of his attitude. We believe his quality, experience and versatility will help us."

Nürnberg have moved immediately to fill the void Frantz inevitably leaves behind by taking Özgür Özdemir under contract from Eintracht Frankfurt. "He's a player we've been monitoring for a while and we're convinced about his potential," said the Bavarian club's sporting director Martin Bader. "We're delighted Özgür Özdemir, another young and talented player, has opted for Nürnberg."
