Munich - FC Bayern München's record-ending defeat at FC Augsburg was the talk of the football world this past weekend, but you had to look elsewhere for the standout player of Matchday 29 in the Bundesliga.

Apple of your eye

As ever, bundesliga.com readers flooded the virtual polling stations to vote for their favourite - and now we can reveal the winner...

Borussia Dortmund striker was the runaway victor atop our weekly ballot, securing 50 per cent of the poll after netting the all-important equaliser as BVB came from behind to pick up three priceless points against VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday.

The prolific Polish international now joins Bayern team-mate-to-be Mario Mandzukic at the top of the scoring charts on 17 goals for the season in the neck-and-neck race to be crowned Torschützenkönig.

Calhanoglu blockbuster

Some way off the BVB goal-getter, albeit no less worthy of a mention, was Hamburger SV saviour Hakan Calhanoglu (18 per cent). The Turkey international rifled in an unstoppable opening goal against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in a gutsy 2-1 win that helped lift HSV out of the bottom two into the relegation play-off position.

There was a tie for third, meanwhile, with rising FC Schalke 04 talent Leon Goretzka's equalising goal in Saturday's 1-1 draw at SV Werder Bremen not enough to knock VfB Stuttgart flier Ibrahima Traore (ten per cent) off the podium, the Guinean international having chipped in with an assist in his side's Baden-Württemberg derby win over SC Freiburg.

Last but by no means least

As for the nearly rans, that tag is shared on this occasion by Eintracht Braunschweig top scorer Domi Kumbela and the instigator of Bayern's already famous derby downfall, Augsburg forward Alexander Esswein.

Kumbela was on target for the ninth time this season as the Lions blew away local rivals Hannover 96 on Sunday, while Esswein worked his socks off to help bring an end to the champions' 53-match unbeaten run and inflict a maiden Bundesliga defeat on Pep Guardiola.
