Julian Schuster's overhead kick put the guests ahead with their very first effort on goal after they survived an early siege. Karim Guede added a second before Joselu snatched a long-overdue goal for the hosts. Any hopes of a fightback were dashed when Felix Klaus restored Freiburg's two-goal advantage, before Guede had the final word with his second and Freiburg's fourth.
Against the run of play
Frankfurt wasted little time getting warmed up and set the tone for the game after just 50 seconds when Stefan Aigner saw his shot cleared off the line by Pavel Krmas. Wave after wave of attacks bore down on Oliver Baumann's penalty area, but the hosts could not convert their pressure into goals.
Johannes Flum, Alexander Meier and Aigner all went close, while Baumann almost brought more trouble on himself when he delayed his clearance until Meier was a little too close for comfort. However, after surviving the initial onslaught, Freiburg broke forward and showed Frankfurt just how it was done, with Schuster's acrobatic overhead kick from close range stunning the home crowd into silence
It did not take Frankfurt long to get back into their stride though, with the next surge of attacks seeing them put Baumann under even more pressure before the break. The Freiburg custodian was at full stretch to block Flum's long-range effort, helping Freiburg to a slightly fortuitous lead at the interval.
The guests were swift to double their advantage after the break, when Admir Mehmedi fed an inch-perfect pass through to Guede, who skipped past goalkeeper Kevin Trapp and slotted his shot past the covering Marco Russ, who was helpless to stop it on the line.
Drama to the end
Five minutes later Frankfurt finally got a goal, as Joselu headed home at the second attempt after Baumann had saved his initial shot. With a foothold in the game once more, the intensity shot up and Constant Djakpa had a curling free-kick tipped over as Frankfurt refused to accept defeat.
Yet it was not to be their day, as Freiburg's cold-blooded finishing in the penalty area put the match beyond Frankfurt's reach. Klaus netted after being put through by an industrious Mehmedi, who missed two gilt-edged chances to wrap up victory on the counterattack. Guede settled any lingering nerves with a cool finish in stoppage time to seal three important points for Freiburg.
