Prudence the main consideration in transfer window

Frankfurt - Financial prudence was the main consideration for the clubs in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 during the second transfer window from 1 to 31 January 2014.

A total of 33 player transfers took place involving Bundesliga clubs with 34 changes of club for players in Bundesliga 2. This equates to an average of 1.8 transfers per club. By comparison: in the same transfer window in 2013, a total of 89 transfers were completed (46 Bundesliga, 43 Bundesliga 2).

During the transfer window just ended, Bundesliga clubs predominantly recruited from abroad. Overall, 24 players arrived from foreign clubs, 12 in Bundesliga 2. The majority of foreign players eligible to play in the Bundesliga come from Austria (27) followed by France (24) and Croatia (20). A total of 24 players transferred from the Bundesliga to foreign leagues.

At the closure of the second transfer window of the 2013/14 season, there are a total of 1,022 professional footballers registered in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 with an average age of 25.5. The proportion of players with German nationality increased slightly to 66 per cent (from 64 per cent), while the proportion of those emerging from clubs' own youth academies remains constant at 21 per cent.
