Leverkusen - Bayer 04 Leverkusen's Australia international winger has suffered a serious knee injury in training.

The 25-year-old tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Friday and an MRI scan on Saturday confirmed the severity of the injury, which will keep Kruse out for the rest of the 2013/14 season, jeopardising his chances of featuring at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He is set to undergo an operation next week.

Kruse, who has won 27 caps for Australia, has made 15 Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen this season, scoring twice and providing two assists.
