Munich - Off the Ball, our weekday feature, casts an eye over the weird, wonderful and sometimes controversial tales to have emerged from Germany's top flight.

Today, we check-in with Mr. Air Miles Pep Guardiola, get the lowdown on Hannover 96's new gaffer Tayfun Korkut and light a very special candle for Formula One legend Michael Schumacher.

FC Bayern München’s head coach and’s best coach of the season so far Pep Guardiola returns to Munich on Friday, in preparation for his side’s mid-season training trip to Doha. The 42-year-old spent the festive season back in Barcelona, whilst also taking time out to offer a few words of wisdom at Dubai's International Sports Conference on 28 December. Talk about jetsetter.

Staying with coaches, Hannover 96’s decision to appoint Tayfun Korkut as their new tactician has been well received by Germany boss Joachim Löw (pictured), who first came into contact with the former Turkey international during a spell in charge of Fenerbahçe S.K. in the late 1990s. “Tayfun is really ambitious and applies himself to everything he does,” Löw enthused. "He was like that as a player and is like that as a person." Good news for fans of the floundering Reds, then…

And finally, please join hands to wish seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher a massive get well soon on this his 45th Birthday. The German sports icon remains in a medically induced coma following a serious skiing accident, with fans earlier today staging a silent vigil on the grounds of the Grenoble hospital where he is currently being treated for his injuries.
