Munich - While FC Bayern München were busy flying the Bundesliga flag in the out in Morocco, there was one man closer to home doing his own army of followers proud on Matchday 17.

A win pays double

Japan’s Shinji Okazaki set tongues wagging with an electric performance in 1. FSV Mainz 05’s 3-2 win at Hamburger SV, later getting his hands on our Player of the Week award - as voted for by you, the bundesliga.com users.

With 45 per cent of the poll, no one came near the 27-year-old forward, who capped his most productive Hinrunde to date with a brace and assist in an enthralling encounter at the Imtech Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Okazaki is now the first Japanese player to have struck three doubles in the Bundesliga and has already grabbed more goals this term (eight) than in any of his previous two campaigns in Germany’s top division.

Samba sensation

Another of the Bundesliga’s bountiful global stars came in second, with VfL Wolfsburg’s Diego taking his place on the podium (26 per cent) after opening the scoring in Sunday’s 2-2 draw away to Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The Brazilian has been integral to the Wolves’ return to the top-six equation, scoring three and laying on four assists in 14 league outings so far this season.

Multinational ballot

Switzerland international Admir Mehmedi’s performance did not go unnoticed either (11 per cent). The Macedonia-born striker scored twice as SC Freiburg moved to within a point of safety following a 2-1 win over Hannover 96.

Last but by no means least, meanwhile, were Hertha Berlin’s BVB-slaying forward Sami Allagui (eight per cent), Gladbach’s irrepressible Raffael (five per cent) and SV Werder Bremen matchwinner Santiago Garcia.
