Munich - FC Bayern München winger Arjen Robben faces up to six weeks on the sidelines after medical examinations revealed the knee injury suffered in Wednesday’s at FC Augsburg to be more serious than first thought.

"Hugely disappointed"

"Arjen Robben has a deep laceration to the knee joint," said club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt on Thursday. "The thigh bone took the studs full-on and bled massively."

Faced with the prospect of not playing again this calendar year and effectively ruled out of the FIFA Club World Cup later this month, the news comes as a huge blow to a player Bayern’s sporting director Matthias Sammer described as "in the form of his life".

"Obviously I’m hugely disappointed," lamented Robben himself. "I’ve been playing so well up until now and have enjoyed every game, but I’ll be back to help the team achieve what we set out to do at the start of the season."

The Reds face SV Werder Bremen and Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga, as well as Manchester City FC in the UEFA Champions League, before travelling to Morocco for the Club World Cup on 18 December.
