Stuttgart - After having their mid-season training base in Turkey for the past three seasons, VfB Stuttgart have opted to travel to South Africa this January in order to prepare for the second half of the 2013/14 campaign.

Happy memories

Thomas Schneider’s team will stay in Cape Town from 7 to 16 January and act as Bundesliga ambassadors for the Deutsche Fußball-Liga GmbH, who will be subsidising the trip.

As well as helping the players to get back into the rhythm of football after the winter break, VfB will also help boost the profile of the Bundesliga internationally. It is the first time that South Africa will welcome a German professional club for its pre-Hinrunde training camp.

For one man in the squad, it will be a return to familiar surroundings. Cape Town was the venue for Germany’s 4-0 win over Argentina in the quarter-final of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, a tournament at which VfB’s 32-year-old striker Cacau played and scored. It will also be where Stuttgart play “two or three” friendly games which will be arranged in due course.
