Ahead of Saturday afternoon's heavyweight tussle at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, bundesliga.com provides a statistical overview of the past meetings between these two old rivals:
Uncanny: FC Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund have played each other 82 times so far in the Bundesliga. The current balance stands at 29 wins for Schalke, 29 for Dortmund and 24 draws.
The Royal Blues restored historical parity courtesy of a rare season double over their near-neighbours in 2012/13, winning both games 2-1.
All-in-all, the sides have met competitively 163 times down the years since first crossing swords back in the 1920s. Until the post-WWII era, Schalke were the unquestioned top dogs, a fact still just about reflected in their overall head-to-head record of 67 victories over die Schwarz-Gelben, who have racked up 56 wins of their own.
Quick out of the blocks: In each of the last three matches, Schalke have gone in front inside the opening quarter-hour. That's a trend BVB will definitely be looking to nip in the bud.
This particular Bundesliga encounter has seen 13 players sent off all-told, eleven of them since 2000. Schalke have been the main perpetrators, with eight of their number seeing red as against five from Dortmund. Nobody has been sent for an early shower in any of the past five meetings, however.
As far as games at the Veltins Arena go, Schalke have scored - and conceded - at least one goal in each of the previous seven. Dortmund have won just three of their 17 outings in Gelsenkirchen since 1997 - but they have a decent balance there under Jürgen Klopp (two wins, two losses, one draw).
The Royal Blues' highest home victory over BVB was 6-1 in December 1985. Dortmund's most prolific away-day at their neighbours was a thumping 6-2 success back in September 1964, long before the current Veltins Arena saw the light of day.
