Munich - FC Bayern München midfield star Thiago Alcantara has begun light training after an ankle injury.

Excitement doused

The 22-year-old summer signing started light running exercises on Thursday afternoon at Bayern's Säbener Straße training complex before working on the strength and stability of the right ankle, where the ligaments were torn. It is a step closer to a return to full training for the Spaniard, but when he will make his first-team comeback is still unclear.

The good news for head coach Pep Guardiola was tempered, however, as Peruvian striker Claudio Pizarro suffered a muscle strain in his right thigh on the same afternoon. The injury means the Bundesliga's record foreign goalscorer will miss four to six weeks of action, depending on the outcome of a provisional medical examination.

Pizarro joins Holger Badstuber, Xherdan Shaqiri and Thiago in being unavailable for this weekend's home clash with Hertha Berlin.
