Dortmund - Borussia Dortmund defender Marcel Schmelzer has been ruled out for three weeks after picking up an injury in training prior to his side’s Bundesliga Matchday 7 clash with SC Freiburg.

The 25-year-old left-back tore muscle fibres in the back of his left thigh on Friday and, according to the club’s doctor Markus Braun, he will miss the next three weeks.

He has therefore been ruled out of Dortmund’s clash Olympique de Marseille in the UEFA Champions League in midweek. Furthermore, he will miss Germany’s final two FIFA World Cup qualifying games, although he could return to action come the end of the two-week international break.
