Munich - European champions FC Bayern München will have to do without over the coming weeks after the 25-year-old midfielder underwent groin surgery on Tuesday.

Sammer not happy with Spanish FA

Martinez, who also strained a knee ligament in last Friday's , picked up the groin injury last month on national team duty with Spain in Ecuador.

The club's record signing from Athletic Bilbao played a key part in Bayern's latest title success in Prague, grabbing the last-minute added-time goal that took the contest into a penalty shoot-out. Afterwards, however, Martinez acknowledged that, "I have no problems for 20, 30 minutes, but then it starts to hurt again."

Sporting director Matthias Sammer had already lodged a complaint with the Spanish FA (RFEF) following Martinez's return from South America, describing the trip as "an effrontery and an imposition for the players." The holding midfielder is only one of several Bayern stars out of action at the moment: Mario Götze and Bastian Schweinsteiger , while Arjen Robben - who has travelled to join the Dutch national team nonetheless - has been troubled by a swollen knee capsule.
