Gelsenkirchen - The bad news doesn’t stop for FC Schalke 04. After their 4-0 hammering at VfL Wolfsburg, it has been confirmed that star striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will be ruled out for at least four weeks with a partial tear of right knee ligaments suffered in the defeat.

Setback offset by Szalai?

The layoff means Huntelaar will be unavailable for the UEFA Champions League playoff against Greek outfit PAOK FC, coached by former Schalke supremo Huub Stevens.

The diagnosis is an additional setback to a Schalke side still reeling after their under-par start to the season. Huntelaar scored twice in the Matchday 1 draw with Hamburger SV, but neither he nor his colleagues could muster up a goal in the 4-0 loss to Wolfsburg on Matchday 2.

The likely candidate to start up front in Huntelaar’s absence is Hungarian international and new signing Adam Szalai. The 25-year-old also scored in the home draw with Hamburg, and replaced Huntelaar from the bench in the Wolfsburg defeat.
