Hanover - Hannover 96 captain could miss the rest of the club's 2013/14 pre-season preparations after it was confirmed he requires an operation on a troublesome knee injury.

"Frustrating"

The club captain will have keyhole surgery in his left knee on Friday, with the procedure to be performed by Prof. Dr. Philipp Lobenhoffer.

USA international Cherundolo complained of pain after coming off second best in a challenge during training on Tuesday. Fluid then had to be drained from his knee, leading Prof. Dr. Philipp Lobenhoffer to conclude that surgery is now necessary to repair the damaged tissue.

"The injury is frustrating, as is the timing. But I am in good hands with the medical team here and I'm convinced that this operation will help me to come back and train without pain," said an upbeat Cherundolo.

The 34-year-old is the club's record appearance-maker in the Bundesliga having played 300 games since arriving in 1999. He has also represented the United States national team on 87 occasions.
