Cologne - After appointing Peter Stöger as their new head coach, 1. FC Köln have announced that Jörg Schmadtke will fill the role of sporting director from July 1, 2013.

"I'm looking forward to the new challenge and will approach it with a lot of enthusiasm," said the former Hannover 96 director. "I have partaken in several positive discussions with those in charge of the club and am confident that we can shape a successful future for 1. FC Köln."

Billy Goats president Werner Spinner was pleased to be able to share the news regarding Schmadtke's decision on Thursday. "After a disastrous campaign, which culminated in our relegation, and a tough, but ultimately successful year of transition, 1. FC Köln have reinvented themselves in all areas. Jörg Schmadtke was the final piece of the puzzle on a sports management level and we're delighted to welcome him to the club. We're now well positioned for the future."

The former Fortuna Düsseldorf and SC Freiburg keeper, who left his post at Hannover in April, will be officially unveiled at a press conference on Friday.
