Gelsenkirchen - Saturday was a good day all round for FC Schalke 04 and captain .

"Special club"

Not only did the Royal Blues overcome rivals Borussia Dortmund in the 142nd Revierderby at a sold-out VELTINS-Arena, they also announced that the defender had signed a contract extension keeping him at the club until June 2017.

Director of sport & communications Horst Heldt was delighted with Höwedes’ decision to commit his future to the Gelsenkirchen outfit. “As a home-grown player and one of top performers, Benedikt is one of the faces of our club,” said Heldt.

"Schalke's a special club," said Höwedes, who joined the Royal Blues in the summer of 2001 after spells at hometown side TuS Haltern and SG Herten-Langebochum."I feel really good here. The familial environment and the togetherness with the fans really suit me."

The German international’s current deal was due to run out at the end of the 2013/14 Bundesliga campaign, but news of an extension will come as music to the ears of the Royal Blues faithful, who hold the defensive lynchpin in high regard.
