SV Werder Bremen have appointed Thomas Eichin as their new sporting director, following the November departure of Klaus Allofs for VfL Wolfsburg.

"Smart decision"

Currently in charge of ice hockey club Kölner Haie, Eichin has put pen to paper on a deal that will keep him at the Weserstadion outfit until 30 June 2016.

"We've made a smart decision in appointing Thomas Eichin as Klaus Allofs' successor. He had been on our shortlist from the beginning and with his previous experience, he fits our profile perfectly," Werder supervisory board chairman Willi Lemke said.

Eichin, 46, made 180 Bundesliga appearances for Borussia Mönchengladbach as a defender between 1985 and 1998. He will officially begin duties at his new club at the end of the current ice hockey campaign, early in the new year.
