1. FC Union Berlin have announced the appointment of former FC Schalke 04 coach Jens Keller as their head coach from the summer.

The 45-year-old has been out of work since being relieved of his duties in Gelsenkirchen in October 2014 and is looking forward to his return from next season. "The conditions at Union Berlin are excellent," Keller said on the Bundesliga 2 club's website. "The club have clear expectations of my work, and that is precisely what I wanted.

"I need objectives to work successfully and that's what I've got here – I can't wait to start work in the summer." Keller has signed a contract until 2018.

"We agree about wanting to break into the top 20 of German football," said Union's sporting director Lutz Munack. "We all know this is a major objective for the whole club and we're really looking forward to working with Jens."

Union are currently seventh in Bundesliga 2, but unable to finish any higher than fourth this season.
